Bust of Anton Raphael Mengs
51 cm high
Acquired by the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, 1997

Born in Kilkenny, Ireland in 1739, Hewetson moved to Rome in 1765 and remained there for the rest of his life. He became a sculptor of considerable fame, executing a portrait bust of Pope Clement XIV and the Empress of Russia, as well as a monument to Cardinal Rezzonicco. In this striking bronze, designed to resemble an antique bust, he portrayed the painter Anton Raphael Mengs.

Like many of his peers, Sterling Clark began by collecting Old Master paintings. Beginning in 1912, he assembled an important group of Italian Renaissance and Netherlandish pictures, but soon extended this to include seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Dutch and French pictures. In 1968, the Old Master holdings were strengthened with a bequest of paintings from the collection of Governor Herbert Lehman. Several of the most significant pictures in the collection-by Ugolino di Nerio, Quentin Massys, and Jean-Honoré Fragonard - have been purchased by the Institute since its opening in 1955.
